Letter of Introduction

My name is Marcela Barros. I am a sophomore at The City College of New York. My major is currently undeclared, but the science major that interests me is Psychology. I am also interested in Finance and plan to double major if possible. In terms of my career goals, I plan on receiving my Bachelors Degree in both Finance and Psychology. After graduating I plan on working within the Finance field, and once I am economically stable, I would like to go back to school and pursue a doctoral degree in Psychology.

I personally enjoy writing very much. I have always liked to write and take a big interest in the things that I usually write about, both in and out of school. I enjoy journaling and just overall conveying my thoughts through literature. I prefer to write papers for classes than to take exams or give presentations. I don’t have much experience with science writing but from what I have done, I definitely enjoy it. It is however much harder to do than traditional writing in an English class. Science writing involves using more critical thinking skills and it can be difficult to write more in terms of length.

I do think that deciphering science texts is complex but I don’t think that it requires a higher level of education. Scientific texts can be very hard to read and it can include vocabulary that people are not familiar with. I know that it has been hard for me to read science texts in the past because of challenges like that. Although, there are resources like google that can help through those challenges so it’s a matter of resources and not quite education. These same challenges are challenges I have faced when assisting a family member with deciphering and communicating science-related issues (medical/health). I’ve had to read medical reports for my parents and have had trouble understanding the vocabulary used in those reports. I used google to search up words I wasn’t familiar with and now I always do that when I have to decipher medical reports.

I would communicate a crucial science-related issue to the community I live in through social media. I know that many people around my age gain knowledge and are aware of news through social media. They then communicate what they know to their family and friends. The best thing about this is that communication is quick and effective. It is also easy to understand and can be translated to other languages through the internet.

Something I wish to improve by taking this writing about science class is my vocabulary and organization. I wish to use stronger words when writing about science and hope to learn the structure of writing a scientific paper. I am not too familiar with these things so I hope I can learn what it takes to write a good and strong scientific paper.

I do not think Standard American English makes science writing more accessible to the general public. We first have to consider that America is a very diverse place where English is something very different from person to person. English has many dialects and it differs from every single state. Not everyone is familiar with the same vocabulary and when it comes to science, vocabulary is much more complex. When things are very hard to read and understand, it is no longer accessible to the public. It’s not tailored to them and it’s not comprehensible.

I know that sustainability is all about protecting the environment by using methods that are most beneficial to the earth. I also know that it’s all about using less to create more. Sustainability is definitely something I see in my daily life. A simple example of this is with recycling. Things are reused over and over again to create less waste and to give an opportunity to the things that seem like they have no more purpose. This expands the lifetime of something while also serving a purpose to the person using it.
